Snaking up the Sight Words Ladder the Fun Way!

LEARN SIGHT WORDS THE FUN WAY - PLAY A GAME!

A4 sized double SIDED game printed on 158gsm featuring at least 100 sight words from the Dolch list. There are no repeated words on the 2 games.

- ROLL the dice , and either read out the word to your child or get the child to read it out.
- For young tots, the game board can be used to INTRODUCE words to them.
- For a child to read, they must MAKE A CONNECTION that letters or words have meaning.
- Try doing an action or point to a colour when the dice lands on the word; it helps your child make meaning of words.

WHEN TO START?

-It's never too young to start your kids on his language journey. While there are many expensive and complicated electronic toys that will probably do a fabulous job at getting your child excited, how often is that a sustained interest?
-  As there are many ways of using this game to interact with a child, there really isn't a preferred age.

Many of the 220 Dolch words cannot be "sounded out" and have to be learnt by "sight," They must be memorized. The list includes pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and verbs.  Some refer to the SIGHT WORD list also as HIGH FREQUENCY words as these are words which are most commonly seen in text.
The Dolch Word List, was created by Edward William Dolch, PhD, in 1948. The list was originally published in his book "Problems in Reading".  More info here.

My suggestion:

6 months to 1.5 years - Laminate the sight word board and use it like a table mat while they are eating to get them excited about letters and words.  You can wipe away any stains easily.

1.5 years to 3 years - Introduce them to the sight words and slowly play the game with them. Parents need to sound the words out to them frequently.

4 years to 7 years - As a preparation for primary school, kids can now learn to form sentences with the words.

- Children learn best from caregivers and parents and this is a simple, effective and yet great way to bond with your child while introducing the concept of sight words.

  FOR Advanced players
- get them prepared for primary school by developing an awareness and interest in sentences and writing .
MAKE UP sentences when the dice reaches the word . MAKE It even more challenging by setting a limit on the number of words in the sentence .
